Exercise intensity and fat loss. Puhl, S. M., & Clark, K. (1992) National exercise and proper nutrition Strength and Conditioning Association Journal. exercise and proper nutrition 14(6) : 16 - 18. Introduction Aerobic exercise is exercise and proper nutrition often used in weight loss programs. To facilitate the greatest weight loss, particularly through fat loss, it has been recommended that exercise be performed at low intensity. Athletes performing in endurance events such as the marathon or 10k runs are invariably lean individuals who train at very high intensities. Why then does the current exercise prescription for weight loss and or fat loss limits itself to low intensity exercise. The purpose of this study was to examine the case for low intensity exercise as the primary exercise prescription for weight loss through fat loss. Method The authors examined previous research attempting to identify the type of fuel substrate (fat or carbohydrate) the body uses in exercise of varying intensity Results When exercising at a low intensity for a prolonged period of time, muscles use both fats and carbohydrates to fuel its movement.
