Increased insulin sensitivity is often associated with body fat loss, but can also be expressed in the absence of fat loss. Exercise and body fat loss by dieting appear to improve the capacity of muscle to take up and utilize glucose by different mechanisms, exercise more through increases in insulin sensitivity, and weight loss older adult more through increases in glucose tolerance. Studies examining the older adult effects of exercise intensity on insulin sensitivity have been inconclusive with some studies finding no relationship between exercise intensity and whole-body sensitivity to insulin, others claiming a proportional relationship, and one showing an inverse relationship. Our older adult study shows that training intensity attenuates increases in insulin sensitivity.
