The purpose of this study was to examine the case for low intensity exercise as the primary exercise prescription for weight loss through fat loss. Method The authors examined previous research attempting to conditioning camps identify the type of fuel substrate (fat or carbohydrate) the body uses in exercise of varying intensity Results When exercising at a low intensity for a prolonged period of time, muscles use both fats and carbohydrates to fuel its movement. As conditioning camps the intensity of the exercise increases the use of carbohydrates conditioning camps increase and the utilisation of fats decrease. Consequently, at higher levels of intensity, the muscles are deriving a greater proportion of energy from carbohydrates than from fats. This is preferential for the body as it receives more useable energy from the oxygen it consumes than if using fats. Since the body uses more fats for energy during low intensity exercise, many reports have suggested that low intensity exercise is preferable for increased fat loss.
